About the San Luis Obispo area
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa - Just off US-101 in San Luis
Obispo is one of the oldest California Spanish mission, Mission San Luis
Obispo. Founded in 1772 it had a turbulent history, was ransacked by land
reformers but then restored and, today is a parish church for many area
Catholics. The original padres' residence is not a fine museum and
contains an extraordinary collection of early photographs and other items
describing the early mission days of California.

Hearst State Historical Monument - Originally the
residence of publisher William Randolph Hearst, this was his unofficial
retreat where he frequently entertain his many rich and famous guests.
Nick-named the Enchanted Hill, Hearst's Castle became a virtual museum and
art gallery housing some of the finest art from around the world. Some of
this art is on display and is viewable by visitors to the site.
Famous for its indoor swimming pools (one replicating a Roman bath)
and exquisite marble work, the Hearst Castle, as it is popularly known, is
a must see for visitors to California. It is about 31 miles north of San
Luis Obispo on CA state highway 1. Several modes of transportation are
available but most visitors use automobile. The Hearst San Simeon State
Historical Monument is now part of the California State Parks System.
