About Baton Rouge
|
One's
first impression of Baron
Rouge is usually stately, antebellum homes under a rich green canopy of
magnolia and cypress trees. While this is a part of Baton Rouge, this
can be very deceiving for Baton Rouge is the home of two major
universities (Louisiana State U and Southern U) and is the northern
anchor of the petro-chemical industrial zone which borders the
Mississippi River's first 100 miles. Just across the Mississippi (or as it's called, the West Bank) is America's Sugar Bowl, thousands of acres of sugar plantations. Two major industries help furnish the economic energy which keeps Baton Rouge a thriving municipality. |
History is very visible in Baton
Rouge. Six national flags have flown over this city (French, English,
Spanish, 'West Florida', Louisiana - yes, it was a sovereign state! -
Confederate States of America and the United States of America). Baton
Rouge was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War when
the Confederates attempted to take back the city from the Union
occupiers. Many museums and viewable buildings present many aspects of
this history. Many visitors find the LSU Rural Life Museum especially interesting. Here you can see a complete re-creation of rural life on a antebellum plantation. |
