I-40 in North Carolina

NOTICE! Due to several severe landslides, I-40 is closed just south (east) of the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Traffic heading east on I-40 is advised to take I-81 to I-26 (in Tennessee), then follow I-26 to I 40 in Asheville, NC. Traffic heading west on I-40 is advised to take I-240 (in Asheville) to I-26 west. Follow I-26 (you will actually be heading north) to I-81 in Tennessee. Take I-81 west to I-40. It is 'hoped' that the blockage will be cleared and the  pavement repaired by the end of April.
 
I-40 is supposed to be an west-east Interstate. In North Carolina it is — up to Raleigh. Then it turns south to Wilmington on the Atlantic Coast. If you are going to Hatteras or elsewhere on the Outerbanks you have some limited choices of 2-lane roads and many small towns to traverse. It really helps us appreciate our American Interstate system!

It seems that just about every community in North Carolina has a tourist attraction. Most are historic in nature, primarily Revolutionary War and Civil War (excuse us... 'War Between the States' — it was anything but civil.)

As you approach the coast you'll find it gets warmer - and - you'll encounter more annoying flying insects. Sorry!
