| Charlottesville is, and has been, home to many notable personages - plus the University of Virginia. In fact it seems like everything in Charlottesville is touched by history. Thomas Jefferson, one of our country's founding fathers and quite an all around genius, loved Charlottesville. His home, Monticello (I-64 exit 121) can be toured and many examples of Jefferson's inventiveness can be viewed there. The University of Virginia (I-64 exit 118) was designed by Jefferson. Guided tours of the Rotundra and Lawn are scheduled several times weekdays. |
James Monroe,
another of our founding fathers, also lived here. His home, Ash
Lawn-Highland (I-64 exit 121), is also open to tourists. We suggest you
stop first at the Visitors center at exit 121. They have a multi-media
presentation which gives you valuable background and better prepares you
to see the homes (plus the Michie Tavern).
Other notables include Meriwether Lewis and William Clark (remember the Lewis & Clark explorations of the Northwest). |
