New
Hampshire and Vermont are rich with
historical sites. They are also rich in beautiful landscapes. The latter you
can view out your window, the former requires a few stops and some extra
time.
I-89 starts in Concord, NH, at the end of the Everett Turnpike
(toll). It weaves around the rolling hills of southern New Hampshire and,
at West Lebanon, crosses the Connecticut River into Vermont and White
River Junction. I-89 now follows the White River to South Royalton where
it turns north to connect with Montpelier. There, it turns northwest once
more, following the Winooski River to Burlington. At Burlington it once
again strikes north finally reaching the Canadian border.
If you are headed to Montreal, we suggest you exit I-89 at exit 21
(in Swanton) and follow VT-78 westbound, through Swanton, across the Lake
Champlaign bridge, to US-2 in Alburg. Turn right on US-2 and continue,
westbound, crossing the Rouses Point Bridge, to US-11. Turn lleft on US-11
and follow it to I-87. Take the northbound opn-ramp at Champlain. I-87,
when it crosses the Canadian border, becomes Highway 15, also a divided,
controlled access freeway, all the wat into Montreal.
