Meems Bottom (covered) Bridge -
Just 4 miles north of New Market of US-11 is the longest remaining covered bridge in Virginia. Constructed ca 1892 by Franklin H. Wissler to provide a more convenient access to his apple orchards and Strathmore Farm, it was designed with strict attention to proper drainage of rain and surface water and topped it with a roof. It also is noted for its 191 foot span. Torched by
vandals as a Halloween prank, it was rebuilt and still is service as a highway bridge. The bridge is on the National Historic Register.
